How to set up a cumulative delta chart in Sierra Chart
To set up a cumulative delta chart in Sierra Chart, open your chart, go to Analysis >> Studies, add the Cumulative Delta Bars - Volume study, and let it draw in its own region below price. Before you read it, check three things: your intraday data is stored tick by tick with bid ask volume, your session times match the instrument, and the reset input matches how you want the running total to restart. Most "wrong" cumulative delta readings come from one of those three checks, not from the study itself.
This guide covers adding the view and validating it. If you want to read delta inside each bar, see the companion guide on how to read a footprint chart.
What cumulative delta actually measures
Delta for a single bar is volume traded at the ask minus volume traded at the bid. Trades at the ask are treated as aggressive buying, trades at the bid as aggressive selling. Cumulative delta is the running sum of those per-bar values from a chosen starting point, usually the start of the session.
Sierra Chart's cumulative delta bars draw that running sum as candles. Each bar has an open (the cumulative value when the bar started), a high, a low and a close. That makes it easy to compare the shape of delta against the shape of price on the same timeframe.
Two honest limits are worth stating up front:
- Delta classifies trades by aggressor side. It does not show resting limit orders, hidden size or intent.
- It depends completely on the quality of your bid ask data. Bad data produces a confident looking but meaningless line.
Step 1: confirm your data can support delta
Cumulative delta needs trade by trade data with each trade marked as at the bid or at the ask. Check this before adding anything.
Tick by tick storage
In Sierra Chart, go to Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings and look at the Intraday Data Storage Time Unit. Sierra Chart recommends 1 Tick for order flow work. If storage is set to a larger unit, such as 1 second or more, multiple trades get combined and the bid ask split can become less precise. Sierra Chart's documentation on tick by tick data configuration explains the setting and how to reload data after changing it.
After changing the storage unit, existing data does not convert itself. You usually need to download or reload historical intraday data for the symbol so the older bars are rebuilt at tick resolution.
A feed that provides bid ask volume
Exchange traded futures such as ES, NQ and CL report every trade, so a proper futures data feed can supply true bid and ask volume. Spot forex is different. EURUSD has no central exchange, so any "volume" from a spot broker reflects that broker's own flow or tick counts, not the whole market. If you want delta on the euro, the CME Euro FX futures (6E) contract is the more meaningful source. Spot EURUSD delta may still show something, but treat it as a local, partial view.
Step 2: add the cumulative delta study
- Open the chart for your instrument, for example ES on a 5 minute chart.
- Go to Analysis >> Studies (or press F6).
- Click Add Custom Study and find Cumulative Delta Bars - Volume in the list.
- Select it, click Add, then OK.
The study appears in a new chart region under price. You will also see related variants:
- Cumulative Delta Bars - Volume uses ask volume minus bid volume. This is the standard choice for futures.
- Cumulative Delta Bars - Trades counts the number of trades at ask versus bid, ignoring size.
- Cumulative Delta Bars - Up/Down Tick Volume classifies volume by price ticking up or down, which is a fallback when true bid ask data is not available.
If you are on a futures feed with tick data, start with the Volume version. The Up/Down Tick variant approximates aggressor side and can differ noticeably from true bid ask delta.
All Sierra Chart studies, with their inputs, are listed in the official studies reference if you want the exact wording for your version.
Step 3: set session times and the reset behavior
This is where most setups go wrong. A cumulative total has to start somewhere, and Sierra Chart decides that from your session times and the study's reset inputs.
Check session times first
Open Chart >> Chart Settings and review the Session Times. Confirm the time zone in Global Settings matches what you expect, since session times are entered in your chosen time zone.
Examples to compare against the exchange schedule on the CME Group trading hours page:
- ES and NQ: the regular day session most traders watch runs 8:30 to 15:00 Central Time for the underlying cash index, while the futures trade nearly around the clock with a daily break. Many traders set the day session to start at 8:30 CT and enable the evening session to capture overnight trade.
- CL: many traders treat 8:00 to 13:30 CT as the core day session, with electronic trading continuing outside it.
There is no single correct choice. What matters is that you choose deliberately, because the session start is usually where the running total begins.
Choose how the total resets
The cumulative delta study has inputs that control when the running sum returns to zero, such as resetting at the start of each trading day, or at both the day and evening session starts when an evening session is enabled. Input names can vary slightly between versions, so open the study settings and read each input.
Typical choices:
- Reset at the day session start: overnight flow is excluded, and the line starts at zero when the regular session opens. Useful if you focus on the ES or NQ cash session.
- Reset once per 24 hour trading day: the total builds from the globex open, so the regular session starts already carrying overnight delta.
- No reset: the total keeps growing across days. This can drift to large numbers that are hard to compare day to day.
If your cumulative delta opens the regular session at a large positive or negative value when you expected zero, the reset setting or session times are the first place to look.
Step 4: validate the numbers
Do not trust a new setup until you have checked it against something independent.
Cross-check with per-bar delta
Add a per-bar delta display. Options include a Numbers Bars footprint with delta shown, covered in Sierra Chart Numbers Bars settings for beginners, or a separate delta study that plots ask volume minus bid volume per bar.
Then pick a few bars and check: the close of a cumulative delta bar minus its open should equal that bar's delta. If they do not match, the two studies are probably using different data sources or the chart has not fully reloaded.
Check the session boundary
Scroll to a session start. On a chart set to reset at the day session, the first bar after 8:30 CT on ES should open at or near zero. If it does not, revisit Step 3.
Check for data gaps
Look for flat stretches or sudden jumps that do not correspond to price movement. These often point to missing historical tick data. Reloading the symbol's intraday data usually fixes it.
Reading the view once it is validated
With clean data, the main use is comparing the shape of cumulative delta to price:
- Agreement: price makes higher highs while cumulative delta also climbs. Aggressive buying is consistent with the move.
- Divergence: NQ pushes to a new session high but cumulative delta makes a lower high. Fewer aggressive buyers participated in the new high. This is context, not a signal, and price can keep going.
- Absorption hints: CL prints strong negative delta while price holds a level. Sellers were aggressive but price did not follow, which may suggest passive buyers absorbed the flow.
Timeframe matters. A 1 minute chart shows noisy, fast swings, while a 15 minute or 30 minute chart makes session-level structure easier to see. If you also run a footprint, keep its timeframe aligned; the footprint chart setup guide covers that layout.
Conclusion
A reliable Sierra Chart cumulative delta chart setup is mostly about validation. The study takes seconds to add. The real work is confirming tick by tick storage, a feed with genuine bid ask data, session times that match the instrument, and a reset input that starts the total where you expect. Cross-check the cumulative bars against per-bar delta and session boundaries before relying on what the line shows, and treat any reading as context alongside price rather than a standalone signal.
FAQ
Why does my cumulative delta look different from another platform's?
Different platforms can use different session start times, reset rules, data feeds and trade classification methods. Match the session and reset settings first, then compare. Small differences are normal; large ones usually point to a data or session mismatch.
Can I overlay cumulative delta on the price chart instead of a separate region?
Yes. In the study settings you can change the chart region to the main price region, but the scales differ, so it is often clearer to keep it in its own region with its own scale.
Does cumulative delta work on range or volume bars?
Yes. The study calculates from the underlying trades regardless of bar type, so it works on tick, volume, range and time based charts. The bar type only changes how the running total is grouped visually.
Should I use the continuous contract or the front month?
Either can work, but be consistent. Around rollover, volume shifts between contracts, so check that your chart is on the contract that carries most of the volume, otherwise delta can look unusually thin.
