How the Volume at Price Threshold Alert V2 study flags price levels that meet your volume conditions, which levels it can highlight, and how to make its markers readable.

Sierra Chart volume at price threshold alerts: what V2 can highlight and how to set its visual output

What volume at price threshold alerts actually do

Sierra Chart volume at price threshold alerts come from the Volume at Price Threshold Alert V2 study. It scans the volume traded at each price inside every bar and marks the levels that meet a condition you define, such as total volume, bid volume or ask volume at or above a threshold. It then draws a visual marker at those prices and, optionally, fires an alert. The study does not predict anything. It only finds levels where your volume condition was met, so you see them without reading every footprint cell.

This article covers two things. First, which kinds of levels the study can highlight. Second, how to configure its output so it stays readable on an ES, NQ or CL chart. For the footprint itself, see the Sierra Chart footprint color settings guide. This study is a filter on top of that data, not a replacement for it.

Data the study needs before anything else

The study reads volume at price, so it depends on the same data as a footprint chart. Without bid and ask detail at each price, bid or ask conditions have nothing reliable to compare.

Check these before you configure thresholds:

  1. In Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings, confirm Intraday Data Storage Time Unit is set to 1 tick. The Sierra Chart tick by tick data configuration page explains why this matters.
  2. Confirm your historical data actually holds tick level detail for the days you load. If older bars were stored at a coarser unit, highlights on those bars can be missing or wrong. The footprint tick data requirements article walks through how to verify historical cells.
  3. Open the chart with the instrument's correct tick size. ES and NQ trade in 0.25 increments, CL in 0.01. The study evaluates price rows, so a wrong tick size or a coarser grouping changes which volume falls into each row.

If a highlight looks wrong, compare it against a Numbers Bars footprint of the same bar. The Numbers Bars documentation describes how those per-price values are built, which is the reference the alert study should agree with.

Alert conditions: what the study can highlight

Input names and the exact list of options can change between Sierra Chart versions, so open the study's Settings and read the inputs tab on your own installation. Check the Studies Reference for the current description. In practice, the conditions fall into a few families.

Total volume at a price

The simplest condition marks any price inside a bar where total traded volume meets your threshold. On ES this shows the single rows where trading concentrated within a bar. That is useful when you want to see where size actually traded during a fast move, rather than inferring it from the bar range.

Bid or ask volume at a price

You can compare only the volume traded at the bid, or only at the ask, against the threshold. This isolates one side. A level highlighted on bid volume means a lot of selling hit bids at that price. It does not tell you who won. Treat it as a location to watch, not a signal.

Differences and comparisons between sides

Depending on the version, conditions can also compare sides, for example ask volume minus bid volume at the same price. These are horizontal comparisons. They are not the same as diagonal imbalances, which compare ask at one price with bid one tick lower. If diagonal logic is what you want, the diagonal imbalance settings article covers that separately.

Choosing a threshold value

There is no universal number. A threshold that isolates a handful of rows per session on CL can light up every bar on ES, because the contracts trade very different volumes per tick. A practical method:

  1. Load a few recent sessions with a footprint visible.
  2. Note what a large cell looks like on your timeframe during the active part of the session, not overnight.
  3. Set the threshold above that and check how many levels get highlighted.
  4. Raise it until highlights are occasional. If every bar has three markers, the study is not filtering anything.

Recheck the value when you change bar period or instrument, and when market activity changes noticeably. A 1-minute NQ chart and a 5-minute NQ chart need different thresholds because each bar aggregates a different amount of volume per row.

Configuring the visual output

The goal is a marker you notice at a glance without hiding the footprint numbers underneath.

Subgraph color and draw style

Open the study settings and go to the Subgraphs tab. Each output the study plots has its own color, draw style and width. Check which draw styles your version offers for the highlight subgraph, typically some form of marker or line at the price. Pick a color that does not repeat one already used in your footprint scheme. If your footprint uses green and red for ask and bid, a neutral highlight such as yellow, white or light blue avoids confusing a threshold level with an imbalance color.

Width and transparency

Keep line or marker width small enough that the numbers in the cell stay legible. If you run a dense footprint on ES with many rows per bar, a thick highlight covers adjacent rows. Zoom to your normal trading zoom level before judging, since a width that looks fine zoomed in can bury text zoomed out.

Extending highlighted levels

Some threshold studies can extend a highlighted level to the right so it stays visible after the bar closes. Check the inputs tab for an option that extends lines or keeps them until price returns to the level. If it exists, decide how long lines should persist. Unlimited extensions on an active NQ session quickly turn into a grid of lines. Limit them, or use a higher threshold so fewer levels qualify.

Chart level display

General display behavior, such as how the chart draws studies over the price graph and how scaling works, is set at the chart level. The Chart Settings documentation covers those options. If the study output looks offset or clipped, check chart scaling and the study's region placement before changing thresholds.

Turning highlights into alerts

Highlights work on the chart without any alert. If you also want notification:

  1. In the study inputs, find the alert related input and choose an alert sound or alert option. Option names vary by version, so read the list rather than assuming.
  2. Confirm alert sounds are configured in Sierra Chart's global alert settings and that your system audio actually plays them.
  3. Check how the study handles repeat alerts. You usually want one alert per qualifying level, not a new one on every tick while the bar is still forming.
  4. Review triggered alerts in the alerts log or manager available in your version, so you can confirm which bar and price each one came from.

Remember that an alert on a forming bar reflects volume so far. The same level may meet the condition at 10:01 and keep growing afterward, which is expected behavior.

A worked configuration example on ES

Here is a sequence for a 1-minute ES chart, without specific numbers since your threshold must come from your own data:

  1. Confirm 1 tick storage and that the loaded days have tick detail.
  2. Add Numbers Bars and set it to show bid and ask volume per price.
  3. Add Volume at Price Threshold Alert V2 to the same chart.
  4. Set the condition to total volume first, so you learn what the study marks before trying one-sided conditions.
  5. Pick a threshold from the observation method above and adjust until highlights are occasional.
  6. Set a neutral color and a thin width, and verify text in highlighted cells remains readable.
  7. Only after the visual output is stable, enable alerts.

If you would rather start from a working footprint layout and add the threshold study on top, a Sierra Chart footprint chartbook gives you the Numbers Bars base already configured, so you only tune the alert layer.

Conclusion

The Volume at Price Threshold Alert V2 study is a filter. It highlights price levels where total, bid, ask or comparative volume meets your condition, and it can alert you when that happens. Its value depends on correct tick data, a threshold that matches the instrument and timeframe, and output colors that do not fight your footprint. Configure the visual layer first, verify against Numbers Bars, then add alerts. If you want a footprint base that is ready to extend, the Sierra Chart chartbooks from SierraOnShop give you a configured starting point.

FAQ

Can I use the threshold alert study without a footprint chart visible?

Yes. The study reads volume at price data on its own, so it can run on a regular candlestick chart. Data requirements stay the same, and you lose the ability to visually verify each highlight against footprint numbers.

Why do highlights appear on recent bars but not on older ones?

The most common cause is historical data stored without tick level detail. Check the storage time unit and whether older data was downloaded or recorded at a coarser setting.

Should I use the same threshold for ES and CL?

No. The contracts trade different volumes per price level and have different tick sizes. Set each threshold from observation on that specific instrument and timeframe.

Can I save my threshold setup to reuse on other charts?

Yes. Save the studies as a study collection, which uses the .stdycllct extension, or keep them inside a chartbook. The study collections documentation explains how to save and apply them.
