Why a chartbook opens but does not display correctly

When a Sierra Chart chartbook is not displaying correctly, the cause is usually one of three things. The chart has no usable data, the saved symbol does not match your data feed, or a study depends on data, a custom DLL or a chart number that your setup does not provide. Work through those three in order and most problems are solved in a few minutes without rebuilding anything.

This guide assumes the chartbook file is already in your Data folder and opens through File >> Open Chartbook. If you are not there yet, start with how to install a Sierra Chart chartbook and come back here.

Start with the message log

Before changing settings, open Window >> Message Log. Sierra Chart writes most loading problems there, including:

  • Symbol errors, such as a symbol not found or not enabled for your account
  • Data download errors and connection status
  • Custom study DLLs that could not be loaded
  • Warnings that a study needs tick by tick or bid/ask data

Read the newest entries after reopening the chartbook. One clear line in the log often tells you which of the sections below applies.

Blank charts: confirm data is actually arriving

A blank chart, or a chart with only one or two bars, is a data problem far more often than a chartbook problem.

Check the connection

Look at the status in the title bar or open File >> Connect to Data Feed. If you are disconnected, the chartbook can only show what is already stored locally, which may be nothing. Also check Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings to confirm the correct service is selected. A chartbook built on one service and opened on another can look empty until the symbols are adjusted.

Check market data entitlement

For CME products like ES, NQ and CL, you need real time or delayed exchange data on your account. A connected feed without the right exchange entitlement can still produce blank charts. The message log usually reports this explicitly.

Check how much history the chart loads

Open Chart >> Chart Settings (F5) and look at the data limiting options, such as the number of days to load. A value that is too small, or a chart opened on a weekend with only one day loaded, can show almost nothing. Raise it to a sensible value for the timeframe, for example 5 to 10 days for a 1-minute ES chart.

Check the stored data itself

If the symbol is right but the history looks corrupted or has gaps, select the chart and use Edit >> Delete All Data and Download. This rebuilds the local data file for that symbol. Do it outside fast markets, because the download can take some time on tick by tick data.

Symbol mismatch: the chart shows the wrong or no instrument

A chartbook saves the exact symbol string of each chart. That string is tied to the data service and the contract month used by whoever built it, so it rarely matches your setup perfectly.

Expired futures contracts

ES, NQ and CL futures roll on fixed schedules. ES and NQ use quarterly months (H, M, U, Z), while CL lists monthly contracts. If the chartbook was saved on an expired contract, the chart either stays empty or shows old data that stops at expiration. You can check current contract months and listing schedules on the CME Group E-mini S&P 500 contract specifications.

To fix it, open Chart >> Chart Settings, find the Symbol field and select the current front month from the symbol list instead of typing it. Selecting from the list guarantees the format matches your service.

Different symbol format per data service

The same ES contract can be written differently depending on the data or trading service, with different exchange suffixes or year formats. A symbol that looks almost right is still wrong to Sierra Chart. Again, always pick the symbol from the list for your current service rather than editing the text.

Forex symbols

For EURUSD, the naming depends on the forex data source. A chartbook built on one forex feed can show nothing on another. Change the symbol through Chart Settings and confirm prices appear before checking any studies.

Update every chart, not only the first one

Order flow chartbooks often contain several charts: a footprint, a DOM, a higher timeframe profile. Each chart stores its own symbol. Use Window to cycle through all chart windows and confirm each one shows the intended instrument. A forgotten chart on an old contract is a common reason one window in a workspace stays blank.

Missing studies: why indicators do not appear

If price bars display but a study is missing, open Analysis >> Studies (F6) on that chart. First confirm whether the study is listed at all.

The study is listed but not visible

  • Check that the study is not set to hidden in its Settings and Inputs.
  • Check its graph region. A study placed in a region that has been collapsed or resized to zero height will not be seen.
  • Check its scale settings. A study using an independent or user-defined scale can plot far outside the visible range. Try setting the scale to automatic temporarily.
  • Check subgraph draw styles and colors. A subgraph set to the same color as the background or drawn as Ignore looks missing even though it calculates.

The study needs data your setup does not record

Footprint (Numbers Bars), delta and many imbalance studies need tick by tick data with bid and ask volume. In Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings, check that intraday data storage is set to 1 tick. If it was previously set to a larger time unit, the existing history will not contain the detail these studies need, and you may need to download the data again after changing the setting. The Sierra Chart documentation on Numbers Bars lists these data requirements. For the reading and layout side of this study, see Sierra Chart footprint chart setup.

The study is a custom DLL you do not have

Custom studies built with ACSIL live in a separate DLL file. A chartbook stores the study and its settings, but not the DLL. If the DLL is not present in your Data folder, the study cannot load and the message log reports it. The fix is to obtain and install the DLL from its author, then reopen the chartbook. The difference between what a chartbook keeps and what it relies on externally is covered in Sierra Chart study collection vs chartbook.

The study references another chart

Some studies pull values from another chart in the same chartbook, using its chart number. Overlays, higher timeframe levels and some profile references work this way. If you deleted, duplicated or reordered charts, the reference can point at the wrong chart or nothing. Open the study inputs, find any chart or study reference input and point it back to the correct chart.

Unexpected display after loading: sessions and time zone

Some chartbooks display, but not the way they should. Profiles start at the wrong time, the session looks cut in half, or delta resets mid-session.

  • Check Global Settings >> General Settings for your time zone. Session times are interpreted in this time zone.
  • Open Chart >> Chart Settings and review the Session Times tab. An ES chartbook built for the regular trading session will look different from one set to the full overnight session.
  • If the chartbook was built in another time zone, its session times may now be offset by several hours.

Sierra Chart chart settings documentation explains each of these options in detail.

A quick checklist in the right order

  1. Read Window >> Message Log after opening the chartbook.
  2. Confirm the data feed is connected and the right service is selected.
  3. Confirm the symbol on every chart is a current contract selected from the list.
  4. Check days to load and, if needed, delete and redownload the data.
  5. Confirm intraday storage is set to 1 tick for order flow studies.
  6. Open Analysis >> Studies on each chart and check visibility, region and scale.
  7. Install any custom DLLs the chartbook depends on.
  8. Verify chart references, session times and time zone.
  9. Save the chartbook under a new name once everything displays correctly.

Saving a corrected copy matters. It gives you a known good version to return to after the next contract roll or a Sierra Chart update.

Conclusion

Most chartbook display problems come from the environment around the file, not the file itself: missing data, an outdated or differently formatted symbol, or studies that need tick data, a DLL or a valid chart reference. Check them in that order and you avoid rebuilding a workspace that only needed a symbol update. If you would rather start from a workspace that is already organized and documented, the ready-to-use Sierra Chart chartbooks still need your own symbol and data checks, but they remove the layout and study setup work. FAQ

Do I need to fix the chartbook again after every futures roll?

Yes, unless you use a continuous contract setting. At each roll, update the symbol on every chart to the new front month, then save the chartbook.

Why does the chartbook look fine on one computer and not on another?

The second computer may use a different data service, time zone, intraday storage setting or be missing a custom DLL. Compare those settings between both installations.

Can a Sierra Chart update break a chartbook?

It is uncommon for built-in studies, but custom DLLs sometimes need to be rebuilt or updated by their author after a version change. Check the message log first.

Will deleting and redownloading data remove my studies?

No. Edit >> Delete All Data and Download affects the stored price data for the symbol, not the studies or settings saved in the chartbook.

Why are font sizes and colors different from the screenshots?

Graphics settings and color schemes can depend on global settings and screen scaling. Adjust them in Global Settings and the chart's graphics settings, then save the chartbook.
