Sierra Chart chartbook missing studies: how to check custom study files, permissions and version compatibility
A chartbook opens but studies are missing or flagged? Work through custom study files, study permissions and chartbook compatibility checks to find the cause.

Why a chartbook opens with missing studies
When Sierra Chart opens a chartbook and reports missing studies, the chartbook is usually fine. The problem is almost always one of three things: a custom study file (a DLL) that is not in your Data Files Folder, a study you are not authorized or licensed to run, or a version mismatch between the Sierra Chart build that saved the chartbook and the one opening it. Work through files, then permissions, then versions, in that order, and you will find the cause in most cases.
This guide focuses only on missing-study messages. If your charts are blank, show the wrong symbol or display nothing at all, start with the broader guide on fixing a Sierra Chart chartbook that is not displaying correctly.

What a chartbook actually stores
A chartbook (.Cht file) stores chart windows, their settings and the list of studies applied to each chart, along with each study's inputs. It does not contain the code of custom studies. It only holds a reference to them, essentially the DLL file name and the function name inside that DLL. Sierra Chart's chartbook documentation explains what the file saves.
That distinction explains most missing-study problems. Built-in studies, such as Numbers Bars, Volume by Price or VWAP, ship with Sierra Chart itself, so the reference resolves as long as your version includes them. Custom studies need a separate file on your machine, and if that file is absent, renamed or blocked, the chart has a reference pointing at nothing.
Step 1: identify which studies are missing
Before changing anything, find out exactly what Sierra Chart could not load.
- Open the Message Log (Window >> Message Log). Load-related errors are written there, usually with the study or DLL name.
- Open the chart that looks incomplete and bring up the Chart Studies window (Analysis >> Studies). Compare the list against what the chartbook vendor or your own notes say should be there.
- Write down each missing item and note whether it is a built-in study or a custom one. You can check built-in names against the Sierra Chart studies reference. If the name is not listed there, treat it as custom.
Example: an ES footprint chart shows bars but no bid/ask cells. If the Numbers Bars study is still in the studies list, this is not a missing study. It is a data issue. If a custom "imbalance highlighter" study is absent and the Message Log names a DLL, you have a file problem.
Step 2: check custom study files
Custom study files are DLLs that must sit in the Data Files Folder. To find that folder, open Global Settings >> General Settings and read the Data Files Folder path. Do not assume it is the default, because many installs point elsewhere.
Check the following:
- The file exists. Look for the exact DLL name from the Message Log in that folder. A DLL copied into the main Sierra Chart folder, a subfolder or your Downloads folder will not load.
- The name is unchanged. If you or Windows renamed the file, for example adding "(1)" during a second download, the chartbook reference no longer matches. Restore the original file name.
- The file is not blocked or quarantined. Antivirus software sometimes quarantines unfamiliar DLLs. Windows may also mark downloaded files as blocked. Check your antivirus history and the file's Properties in Windows Explorer.
- The architecture matches. A DLL built for 32-bit Sierra Chart will not load in a 64-bit install, and the reverse also applies. Ask the developer which build you received if you are unsure.
After fixing the file, close and restart Sierra Chart, then reopen the chartbook. Restarting avoids any doubt about whether a DLL that failed earlier was retried.
If you moved the chartbook from another PC, remember that the DLLs did not travel with it. Copy every custom study file the chartbook uses, not just the .Cht. The chartbook install checklist covers file locations in more detail.
Step 3: check study permissions
A DLL that is present can still refuse to run. Study permissions are the next layer.
Third-party authorization
Many commercial custom studies are authorized to a specific Sierra Chart username. If the DLL loads but the study does not calculate, or the Message Log mentions authorization, check:
- That you are logged in with the same Sierra Chart username you gave the vendor.
- That the vendor has actually completed the authorization for that username.
- Whether the license covers more than one username if you run Sierra Chart on several machines under different accounts.
Do not try to work around authorization. Contact the developer with the exact message from the log.
Service package features
Some built-in studies and features depend on your Sierra Chart service package. If a chartbook was built on an account with a higher package than yours, certain studies may not be available to you. Check the documentation page for the specific study and your account's package before assuming the chartbook is broken.
Data feed permissions
A study that loads but shows nothing can be a data permission problem rather than a study problem. A DOM or heatmap needs market depth enabled in your data feed, and a footprint built with Numbers Bars needs tick by tick data, which means Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings >> Intraday Data Storage Time Unit set to 1 tick. If NQ depth is not part of your subscription, a depth-based study will sit empty. The guide on matching chartbook features to tick, depth and intraday data goes through each case.
Step 4: check chartbook compatibility
Chartbook compatibility problems come from version differences.
- Older Sierra Chart, newer chartbook. If the chartbook was saved in a recent version and uses a study or input added after your version, that study can fail to load or lose settings. Check your version number in the Help menu and compare it with the version the chartbook was made with. Updating Sierra Chart is usually the fix.
- Custom DLL built for a different version. Custom studies are compiled against a specific Sierra Chart interface version. A DLL built for a much newer version may not load in an older install. Ask the developer which minimum version the DLL requires.
- Renamed or replaced studies. Occasionally a study is superseded. If the studies reference lists a replacement, add it manually and re-enter the inputs.
As a rule, update Sierra Chart first, then reinstall custom DLLs from the vendor's latest download, then reopen the chartbook. Doing it in that order avoids mixing an old DLL with a new platform build.
Step 5: rebuild what cannot be recovered
If a study truly cannot be restored, for example the developer no longer supports it, remove the dead reference from the chart and add a replacement. To make future rebuilds faster, save your working study set as a study collection (.stdycllct) in the Data Files Folder. Sierra Chart's study collections documentation explains how to save and apply one. A study collection still references custom DLLs by name, so it does not replace keeping the DLL files themselves.
If you would rather not rebuild a footprint, DOM or profile layout by hand, ready-to-use Sierra Chart chartbooks built from built-in studies avoid most custom-DLL dependency issues in the first place.
Quick diagnostic checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Message Log names a DLL that was not found | Custom study file missing or misplaced | Data Files Folder path in Global Settings >> General Settings |
| DLL present, study does not calculate | Authorization or package | Logged-in username and vendor authorization |
| Study listed but chart cells empty | Data permission or storage unit | Market depth enabled, Intraday Data Storage Time Unit at 1 tick |
| Study missing after moving PCs | DLLs not copied | Copy every custom DLL, not just the .Cht |
| Study inputs reset or study absent | Version mismatch | Sierra Chart version in the Help menu |
Conclusion
Missing studies after opening a chartbook rarely mean the .Cht file is damaged. Read the Message Log, separate built-in from custom studies, confirm each custom DLL is in the Data Files Folder with its original name, verify authorization and package level, then align versions. Working in that order keeps you from reinstalling things that were never broken.
FAQ
Can I open a chartbook that uses custom studies I do not own?
The chartbook will open, but those studies will not load or calculate without the DLL and any required authorization. The rest of the charts and built-in studies should still work.
Does reinstalling Sierra Chart delete my custom study files?
It should not if you install over the existing folder, but always back up your Data Files Folder, including DLLs, chartbooks and study collections, before reinstalling or moving.
Why does the study work on one chart in the chartbook but not another?
Check the symbol and data on the failing chart. A study applied to a CL chart may need depth or tick data that is configured differently from an ES chart in the same chartbook.
Should I delete the missing study reference right away?
No. Note its name and inputs first. Once the DLL or permission issue is fixed, the original reference may load with all its settings intact.
